This fragrance opens with considerable promise. The combination of blackberry, olibanum, labdanum, orange, coriander, and tarragon creates a dark resinous-citrus accord that initially recalls the architectural density often associated with older Amouage compositions. There is a textured warmth in the opening where the fruit is restrained rather than sweet, while the incense and herbs provide a dry, almost ceremonial atmosphere. The transition into the heart is where the fragrance becomes more interesting. Honey, guaiac wood, clove, cinnamon, and bay leaf generate a smoky-spiced body with intermittent floral softness from rose and orchid. At moments, the composition feels as though it is reaching toward an oriental structure built around resins, woods, and sacred smoke rather than conventional gourmand sweetness.
The base suggests substantial depth on paper: oud, myrrh, opoponax, ambergris, patchouli, immortelle, oakmoss, and musk imply a long, evolving drydown. Yet this is also where the fragrance becomes frustrating. Despite the ambitious note pyramid, the performance collapses surprisingly quickly. Projection drops close to the skin within the first hour, and on my skin the fragrance becomes a soft skin scent after roughly two to three hours. The resins and woods remain detectable in traces, but the composition never fully develops the density or persistence that the materials seem to promise. This creates the impression of a fragrance that gestures toward the opulence and layered construction associated with Amouage-style perfumery without fully sustaining it in wear.
Interestingly, the fragrance performs better when layered with Dharma Chakra. Dharma Chakra appears to reinforce the resinous and woody base while extending the smoky-spiced facets that otherwise disappear too quickly. The layering also gives the composition more continuity between opening and drydown, reducing the sense of abrupt evaporation.
Overall, this is a compelling scent profile undermined by weak longevity and limited projection. The structure, note interplay, and atmospheric quality deserve praise, but performance prevents it from reaching the level its composition suggests.
Rating: 4/5 for scent profile and construction; closer to 3/5 when overall performance is considered
